Normally in WS 405, I do a whole unit on the many harms that come from the male-supremacist media known as pornography. As we continue our unit on sexism, heterosexism and anti-trans oppression, it is important to understand that one of the key building blocks of gender oppression is the dissemination of women-hate via pornography. Pornography plays a powerful propagandistic role in trivializing rape, abuse and torture. There have been many powerful feminists who have worked tirelessly against the pornography industry, including Gail Dines, Andrea Dworkin, Catherine MacKinnon, Diana Russell, Jackson Katz, Alice Walker, Gloria Steinem and many more.
